When something happens to your teeth, you may ask yourself: is this really considered an emergency? To help you determine if you need to make an emergency dental appointment, consider the following:
You are experiencing uncontrollable bleeding
There is swelling around your gums or face
You have a tooth that has been knocked out
You have a toothache that is severe and has not gone away after a couple of days
There has been visible damage to your tooth, such as a crack or chip
If you are experiencing any of the above, or if you are in pain and are not sure what the cause is, it is best to err on the side of caution and give us a call. We will be able to help you determine if you need to come in for an emergency appointment and, if so, we will do everything we can to get you in as soon as possible.
If you are in pain, the first thing you should do is call our office. We will ask you about your symptoms and help you determine if you need to come in for an emergency appointment. In the meantime, there are a few things you can try to safely alleviate the pain, including:
Rinsing your mouth with warm water
Gently flossing around the affected tooth to remove any food or debris that may be trapped
Taking over-the-counter pain medication, such as ibuprofen
Applying a cold compress to the outside of your face if you are experiencing swelling
